Already Fighting Battles Their Bodies Shouldn’t Be Facing

There was a time in my nursing career when most of my patients had lived some life. You could expect a certain level of wear and tear, decades of choices, stress, genetics, and time all adding up.
But lately? The story has shifted.
A good majority of my patients aren’t even 30.
And it’s not just their age that stands out..it’s the condition of their health.
I’m seeing unmanaged diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, chronic fatigue, anxiety that’s been left untreated, and bodies already breaking down from lifestyles that never slow down long enough to heal. Meals are rushed or replaced with whatever’s convenient. Sleep is sacrificed. Stress is constant, but rarely addressed.
And here’s the part that hits me every time…
I’ll be 55 in a few months.

And I find myself caring for patients young enough to be my children—watching them navigate health conditions that many of us didn’t face until much later in life… if at all.
That’s not normal. And it shouldn’t be accepted as normal.
From a nursing perspective, this isn’t about judgment—it’s about what we’re seeing in real time. It’s about the growing gap between what the body needs and how little support it’s actually getting on a daily basis.
And then there’s the other layer…
Non-compliance.
Medications not being taken as prescribed. Follow-up appointments missed. Lifestyle recommendations pushed to “later.” And I get it—life is busy, stress is real, and change isn’t easy.
But here’s the truth we don’t talk about enough:
When self-care is neglected long enough, the hospital becomes the backup plan.
And the hospital was never meant to carry that weight alone.
Healthcare systems are stretched thin trying to manage conditions that, in many cases, could have been prevented or at least better controlled with consistency, awareness, and earlier intervention.
But prevention doesn’t trend the way crisis does.
And that’s where we have to shift the conversation.
Let’s Talk About Real Self-Care (Not the Trendy Kind)
Self-care isn’t just spa days and taking a break when you feel overwhelmed.
It’s the daily, sometimes inconvenient choices that protect your future health.
Here’s what that actually looks like:
1. Keep Your Appointments
Not just when something feels wrong. Routine check-ups catch things early, before they become life-altering.
2. Take Your Medications as Prescribed
Not when you “feel like it” or when symptoms show up. Consistency is what keeps conditions from spiraling.
3. Prioritize Sleep Like It Matters, Because It Does
Chronic sleep deprivation impacts everything—your heart, your mood, your metabolism, your ability to cope.
4. Eat Like You Care About Your Future Self
This doesn’t mean perfection. It means balance. Your body needs real nutrients to function, not just convenience.

5. Move Your Body Regularly
You don’t need a gym membership to start. Walking, stretching, staying active—it all adds up.
6. Stop Ignoring Your Mental Health
Anxiety, depression, chronic stress—these aren’t things you “push through” forever. They show up physically, eventually.

7. Pay Attention to Early Warning Signs
Your body whispers before it screams. Don’t wait for it to get loud.
From My Heart as a Nurse… and a Woman Approaching 55
This work has shown me a lot.
It’s shown me how quickly health can decline when it’s not prioritized. It’s shown me how preventable some suffering really is. And it’s shown me how many people are trying to pour from empty cups, thinking they’ll “get to themselves later.”
Later isn’t promised the way we think it is.

And from where I stand at the bedside, I can tell you this:
The hospital should not be your first line of care. It should be your last line of defense.
Let’s Do Better…Together
